Background

WAZOBIA University has a 5-floored building, and Anita, a person with physical disability on both limbs, cannot access the microbiology lecture hall, which is located on the 4th floor of the building.

No functional lifts exist, and the entire building cannot be accessed through ramps. Anita relies on her male coursemates to access the lecture hall on the 4th floor of the building.

Anita represents the difficulties that people with disabilities endure in Nigerian universities.

Although following international trends, the Federal Government of Nigeria enacted the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act in 2018, every public building, including lecture halls, student centres, hostels, sick bay, blocks, libraries, faculty offices, bus stops, parking lots, school-owned and public transportation systems in every university should have required accessibility features from February 2023.

Our Initiative

Beginning with the under-listed Universities, our Education Lawyers need your assistance to determine which universities comply with what the Disabilities Act says Nigerian Universities must provide for persons with disabilities.

Admittedly, there is a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, but we cannot stand akimbo and wait on Government agencies – with all the limitations.

Why not join our education lawyers to stand up for Persons with Disabilities? The greatest threat is to do nothing when you could do something – very well.

Globally, the conversation around accessibility is to promote inclusive building and infrastructure – which emphasizes the importance of accessibility for all.

Our collective efforts will provide valuable insights and foster a culture of accessible and inclusive infrastructure in Nigerian Universities.
